Essential oils

Essential oils are natural oils extracted from plants. They have been used for 1000s of years in the form of resins, for example frankincense or myrrh, and more recently in the form of distilled oils.

Essential oils are non-invasive which means they work with the body systems to aid well-being and health. When used in aromatherapy massage the oils enter the body through the skin and the nasal passages.

Essential oils can have a topical effect. This means they have a direct action on the skin or muscle group when applied. For example, tea tree and lavender on acne, chamomile and yarrow on eczema, ginger and black pepper on sore or tired muscles.

Essential oils can affect the circulation. For example, rosemary and cedarwood can aid blood circulation, so that nutrients and oxygen are carried around the body and waste products are removed from the body. Lavender and marjoram can help reduce high blood pressure. Fennel and juniper can stimulate the lymphatic system to eliminate toxins from the body.

Essential oils can affect hormones. Oils such as geranium and rose can be helpful during difficult periods or the menopause. Jasmine and clary sage are very useful during labour. (These oils should be avoided in pregnancy and all oils should be treated with caution during pregnancy.)

Essential oils can affect the immune system. Our immune systems protect us from disease and illness. Essential oils can directly boost the immune system and they have anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.

Essential oils can affect the mind and emotions. The nerves in the nasal passages travel directly to the hypothalamus which is the part of the brain controlling the memory and emotions. The scent of essential oils can remind us of specific times in our lives, or can evoke the memory of a feeling. Essential oils can be stimulating and uplifting such as lemon or grapefruit, or they can be calming and soothing such as sandalwood and neroli.
